Chapter 2
After school Joe and I waited in front of his car. My love came walking out of school. I pictured her just kissing me, like the dream, except it happened. Jessica came up to the car. “Ready?” Joe asked both I and Jess. We nodded. Joe climbed in the drivers’ seat, and Jess and I sat in the back. “How was your day?” she asked. “Pretty good, had a bad history test. I think I failed! How about you?” I asked. “I passed that history test,” she said, doing her ‘happy dance,’ “and a few things happened…” she was saying. “What?” I asked. She said nothing, her expression blank. She turned her head towards me, her cold, pale hand touching my arm. “I wish I could tell you, but… let’s just say… you’ll get killed,” she said. She wasn’t kidding, either.
“Oh,” I said, “I guess I won’t ask then.” I got tense after she said that. “I’m sorry if I scared you,” she leaned in close to pat my head, “I won’t kill you, but there are… people to do it. I would tell you, but I can’t,” she said, leaning back after Joe yelled at her and accused her of flirting. We laughed, she laughed from a different reason I laughed.
“So, that’s all that happened today?” I asked her. She nodded. “Well, all that was interesting. Mike was getting on my nerves… again,” she said rolling her eyes. She pulled the red scrunchie out of her hair, letting her loose locks fall onto her shoulders. The breeze from her hair filled my air, her scent reaching my nose. I inhaled the intoxicating smell. Chanel perfume I guessed.
“Ah,” I breathed. She looked over at me, as if I were crazy. “He is a weirdo stalker, you know!” I said, she agreed. “So, how’s it going with your crush and you?” she asked me. Honestly, my crush, no, love and I were not even close to anything. “Not telling you!” I said. “But what if I…” she was saying. “Not a chance!” I cut her off. “Well what if I had a…” she was saying. “Nothing in the world will make me tell you! At least not right now,” I said, glancing at Joe. “When he’s gone?” she asked, giving me a puppy dog face. “No,” I said.
She dropped the begging after 39 more nos. She started singing; it was her favorite thing to do when she was bored. She had a wonderful voice.
First day at school I was tryin to play it cool, chillin with my friends, tryin to pretend that I didn't notice you 3 rows down, second to the left with your big brown eyes, it was a song I wrote, ‘Crazy Kind of Crush on You.’
Cause my knees got weak, knocked off my feet Tried but I couldn't find the words to speak can’t let go, my heart says whoa,
She stopped singing as we approached my house.
“I love that song, you know,” she said, as we walked to the porch. “Me too,” I told her, opening the door open for her. She walked inside, saying “thank you.” I closed the door behind me.
“Where’s mom and dad?” I asked Kevin, who was sitting on the couch. “They are out eating with our neighbors,” he answered. “Hi Kevin,” Jessica said, walking up to him. “Hey, Jess. What’s up?” he said, getting up and giving her a hug. “The sky is up. Just kidding! Not much actually,” she said. He winked at her as she came back to my side.
She giggled. “Well, we gotta do some homework. Yell when mom and dad get back,” I said, walking to my room with Jessica by my side. “See ya,” Kevin said, as we left.
We got to my room, and took out our backpacks. She dumped everything out, and a small, white piece of paper fell to the ground. “What’s this?” I asked, holding it in my hand. “It’s nothing. Nothing you should see,” she said trying to get it out of my hand. “Nick,” she said, giving me a puppy dog face, “please give it back to me,” she begged. I shook my head. “Fine! I’ll just go tell Kevin to beat you up, and then HE’LL be my new best friend!” she said. I tossed the note to her. She got a smile on her face. “Thank you,” she said.
We did our homework and started talking. “So, have you even talked to you ‘love’ yet?” she asked. I nodded. Not this again! “Ok, you should ask her out,” she said. I shook my head. “Nope. Nuh-uh. No,” I replied, my voice calm. “Why not?” she asked, tilting her head to the left. I shrugged my shoulders. “I don’t think I can. I think I like her too much,” I said, rubbing my arm, feeling uncomfortable. She nodded. We went out of the room, and onto the couch. My parents weren’t here, and Joe left a note:
Nicky,
K2 and I are down getting ice cream!! YUM! Sorry to leave you two alone. Be back soon!
Your brother,
Joe
It read. “Kev and Joe are out, it’s just us here,” I said. She looked at me, her expression blank. Then a wide smile spread across her face. This is what went downhill. “Wanna play Uno?” she asked. I nodded. “I’ll try not to beat you too hard!” I said. She laughed, as she walked to the game cabinet. She came back with the Uno cards.
I was winning, until I found out she had already said ‘Uno’ and then I lost. “Yeah, you beat me pretty bad!” she said, with a smirk on her face. I was afraid of losing at my game. Even if it was my best friend, I was pretty disappointed. She came up to me. “It’s ok! There’s always next time,” she said, rubbing my back like a child. I got her hand off of me. She laughed. “What?” I asked. “You’re such a baby! It’s funny!” she said. “I’m not a baby! And if I was, it wouldn’t be funny!” I said. “Yeah-huh!” she said.
“Nuh-uh!”
“Yeah-huh!”
“No!”
“Yep!”
Then I started to laugh. She took out her phone. “I gotta go. I’ll see you tomorrow! I’ll drive you after school,” she said. I went up to her and gave her a big hug. As we hugged, the front door opened and Joe and Kevin walked in. We let go, and she walked to Kevin and said goodbye and got a hug. The same with Joe. “Bye,” I yelled, as she left the door. She turned and waved, then shut the door. “I’m ordering pizza. Mom and dad said they will be here at around 10, so we can,” Joe said, picking up the phone. “Ok,” I said.
I plopped myself on the couch and turned the TV on. I found some show about a girl who lived a double life. It was a show called Hannah Montana. The girl was beautiful. Her show name was ‘Miley Stewart’ or something. Her brown hair was lovely under the bright yellow glow of stage lights. Her brown eyes were so big, and pretty. She put on a blonde wig. It wasn’t very different, except her hair. I was glued to the TV, for all the wrong reasons.
I heard the pitter-patter of rain drops falling on the ground. I just remembered that I had to get the mail. I threw on Joe’s black converse, and went outside. It wasn’t freezing cold. Just a bit cold. A soft breeze rail through the trickling rain. I walked over to the mailbox, not running. I wasn’t in hurry to get inside. I got the mail, and tucked it under my jacket. When I got inside, I shook my head letting water drip off my soaked head. My hair was still soaking wet. I took off Joe’s shoes and put the mail on the table.
Nothing exciting. I just sat at the table and waited for dinner.
