Chapter 1:


Today was my twentieth birthday.
I could hardly believe it. (I was getting so old)
I kind of laughed, twenty wasn’t really THAT old, but compared to my eighteen year old boyfriend… I felt… ancient.
Nick had been so busy lately, but I’d become well adjusted to the whole ‘long-distance relationship’ thing.
Phone calls had been just about every day… even if we only had a minute or two to chat, just hearing his voice kept me sane.
I stared at the wall of pictures in my room, most of which were Nick and I.
I missed him so much!
My phone buzzed and I glanced at the screen.
One new text message.

Happy Birthday Love!
I miss you!

I giggled and wrote back quickly.

Thanks!
I miss you too!

I set the phone on my dresser, waiting to hear the familiar buzz of a new text.
No such sound.
I closed my eyes… hoping to get a few more minutes of shut-eye.
I was halfway to unconsciousness when the door flew open.
I looked up just in time to see Rachel tackle me.
“HAPPY BIRTHDAY TWIN!!!!” She yelled.
“Can you please get off of me?” I laughed trying to breathe.
She laughed, “Oh yeah sorry.”
I rolled my eyes.
“SO… how do you feel?” she asked.
"Old." I stuck my tongue out.
“Not this again…” she paused, “Just because you’re older than Nick…”
I covered my ears. “Please… don’t remind me.”
“It’s no big deal. Just a year and a half.”
“Yeah, Yeah.” I nodded and stared hopefully at my phone.
I wanted to talk to Nick, needed to hear his voice.
Still, no call.
I sighed.
Now would be a really nice time for him to show up unexpectedly.
I knew it was hopeless and yet I couldn’t stop wishing.

Chapter 2:


A few hours had gone by and Rach had disappeared to get ready for dinner.
I pried myself off the desk chair and walked towards the closet.
What should I wear tonight? I asked myself as I looked through my clothes.
I skipped over the jeans and t-shirts.
I kind of wanted to dress up.
After trying almost everything in my closet I still hadn’t found anything.
I grabbed my phone (In case Nick called) and walked down the hall toward Rachel’s room.
I thought I’d steal something from her closet.
When I got there all her clothes were on the floor…
I guess she couldn’t find anything to wear either.
I was starting to think dinner tonight just wasn’t going to happen.
That was fine by me…
I mean it seemed weird to celebrate when Nick was of state.

I headed down to the mailroom and was surprised to find a package addressed to me.
I searched for a card but found none.
“Who’s it from?” I asked.
“I don’t know.” the guy shrugged.
“Well thanks anyway.” I mumbled as I turned and left.
I carefully carried it to my room, unsure if it was fragile.
I set it down on my bed and was about to open it when my phone buzzed.
It was Nick… a phone call this time.

I smiled and picked it up. “Hey handsome.”
“Hello beautiful.” I could hear the smile in his voice.
“How are you?”
“Pretty good…I just wish I could be there”
“Me too… I could really use a guy to flirt with.” I grinned
“Well I’ll just have to come visit you then won’t I?”
“Hmm… I’ll have to think about it first.” I teased.
“Pretty please.”
I could practically see the puppy-dog face he was most certainly wearing.
“Well alright.” I laughed.
“How about… two weeks from now?” he asked.
“Sounds great.” I said smiling, though I wished he could be here a little more like now.
I heard something in the background.
“Ahh I have to go. I’ll talk to you later love.”
I nodded, “Definitely!”
“Have a nice birthday okay?”
“I will, Bye.”
“Bye.”
I hung up the phone and set it on my desk.
