Chapter 2
Hey there Delilah what’s it like in New York City? I’m a thousand miles away girl but tonight you look so pretty, yes you do… my alarm clock went off. I rolled over and slapped it off, New York City… one of the top places I wanted to see. I sat up and stretched my arms above my head and yawned, I felt as if I didn’t get enough sleep. I was tired and drowsy. Why does school have to start at eight?!
I walked into the bathroom and showered quickly before all the hot water was taken up. Once drying off and changing into a pair of skinny jeans and a pink short sleeve hooded shirt I walked down the stairs and grabbed an orange. The house was very quiet. I looked at the note on the fridgerator before pouring a glass of juice,
Demi,
I left for work early. I dropped dad off at the store for the day. Be sure to stop by after school to help him. Lots of love, mom
I sighed and walked back up the stairs to grab my backpack and slip my flats on. Once out the door it was about seven thirty, no need to rush. Its not like school was a thousand miles away.
“Hey Demi”, Selena said as she walked up beside me, “Did you understand that study guide at all last night?”
“What study guide?” I asked as I looked up at her. Selena sighed, “Don’t tell me you got distracted again…”
“Well I was studying and then I got bored and I… I started looking at pictures of other places around the globe. Oh my, I saw this beautiful picture of Paris…”
“Demi”, Selena said as she popped me on the head, “wake up! We have a quiz today and you’re telling me about Paris?!”
I moaned, “I’m really gonna get it if I don’t pass this quiz today. It’s the second time I’ve gotten below average in science. I don’t under stand why my parents expect me to be some genius anyways.”
“Yeah we don’t want to be like Henry over there”, Selena said as she pointed to Henry, a kid who was always walked to school by his mother because his glasses were always getting stolen and broken by bullies. Always having to do the bullies’ homework and if he refused…he normally stuffed him in a locker or strapped him to a coat hook by his underwear. Poor Henry, he was small and defenseless. His mother on the other hand… lets just say she’s bigger built than her husband, and her husband is a rather muscular man, playing many years of football but getting injured his senior year while at college.
“Man”, I said as we approached the school and walked into the hallway, “I better cram fast.”
“Here you can borrow my notes”, Selena said as she handed me her note cards. I smiled, “You really are my best friend.”
“She’s coming!” one of the boys yelled as he ran down the hallway. I rolled my eyes, Natashia. When I turned to look at the door, there she was, in all of her Barbie doll glory. She wore a pink mini skirt and a brown fitted tee with a pink belt around her waist. She flipped a strain of blond hair over her shoulder and smirked as people cleared the hallways. Selena groaned, “Look at me, I’m a Barbie girl, in a Barbie world! Life is plastic, it’s fantastic!”
I giggled when Natashia was a ways down the hall and Selena start mocking her. She straighten her blue jean skirt and pulled down her purple shirt, “Excuse me everybody”, she said in a funny voice, actually sounding like Natashia, “make way, its me. The queen of everything dark and evil in this forsaken world.”
I heard someone laugh behind us and we both turned to see Mac standing there watching Selena, “That’s a really good impersonation of Natashia. You actually sound a lot like her.”
Selena blushed tried to hide behind her dark hair, but I could tell she was turning a deep red. She bit her lower lip, “Thanks, I practice in the mirror when I have nothing else to do.”
Mac chuckled and Selena turned an even dark shade of red, “Well, it’s pretty good, except you don’t have the sway or the hair whip down quiet right. You have to be able to smack someone in the face.”
Selena whipped her hair back and giggled. Mac smile, his blue eyes sparkling as he looked at Selena, “I’ll catch ya’ll later.”
“See ya Mac”, I said as I shut my locker door. Selena bit her lower lip and shyly waved at him, “Bye.”
Once he was down the hallway Selena looked at me and squealed, “He said I was funny.”
“Sure he wasn’t talking about your face”, I said jokingly, making Selena playfully slap me.

I looked down at my feet as I walked closer to dad’s store, I didn’t think I did so well on my quiz. I had no idea how to tell my parents, let alone show them my grade.
I walk slowly into the store, listening to the little bell ding as I closed it behind me, “Dad?”
“In the back”, I heard him say. I walked back there and slid my backpack to the ground. I laughed when I saw him, “What are you doing?”
My dad was hanging to the top shelf, swinging back and forth as the ladder was laying down under him, “Well, I was getting more jams to set as displayed, but the ladder fell over and… here I am.”
I picked up the ladder and leaned it against the wall, holding it firmly as dad stepped down on it, “How was school?”
I hesitated, “Fine. Same as usual. Nothing different… as always.”
Dad smiled poked my nosed, “Hey, I know you’re bored being here, but maybe one day a change will come along.”
I smiled at him, “Need me to run the front?”
“Please, I have to deliver an order”, dad said as he handed me a jar of huckleberry jam, set that in the front window with the pyramid of jams, if you will.”
I took the jar and walked to the front, sliding the jar on top. I looked at it carefully, perfect. I noticed a dark spot on the window and scrapped it off with my finger and wiping it on my apron. I looked up just in time to see a huge bus pull in front and park. My eyes got big, “Wow.”
I watched eagerly, hoping someone would walk out, but no one ever did. After a while, it began to roll away. I sighed walked back to the from where I slid behind the counter a solid second went by when I suddenly heard the little bell ding…
