Chapter 01:
Demi sprinted down the street, hoping the memories that filled her head would disappear if she ran fast enough. Warm tears slid down her cheeks, and she stopped to focus on the sign before her. "Why?" she whispered.
The words SOLD OUT were scribbled across the sign in messy handwriting. "Can I help you, miss?" a woman asked from the behind the ticket window.
"No thanks." She walked back to her home, shaking old thoughts away from her confused head.
It had been almost a year since she'd last seen Joe, but her heart hadn't healed yet. Demi started to date another guy, but didn't go far in the relationship when she realized she was still attached - and she couldn't stand to break another heart. She felt that this concert was her only chance to see him again. To see his smile; to hear his laugh; to feel his warm touch.
"Hey!" Someone started calling Demi's name from behind her.
She turned around to see her best friend, Layla, standing behind her. "Oh, hi."
"Come with me." Layla escorted her into her house, sitting next to her on the sofa. "What are you doing, Demi?"
"Uh, sitting here with you?"
"No, I mean with your life," she said in a serious tone.
"Oh," she sighed. "I just can't forget him, Layla - it's impossible."
"Do you still have some of the stuff he gave you?" As she asked this, Demi stuffed her necklace in her shirt. "Give it to me." Layla held out her palm.
She shook her head no. "I can't. It's the only piece of him I have left..." she started as her voice drifted off.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes!" Demi lied.
"Fine, but you need to stop wearing it. People are going to figure out sooner or later that you're a mess." Layla escorted her to the door.
"They probably already have."
"Well, for the people that don't know. Just stop wearing it, Demi."
"Alright," she muttered.
She smiled and hugged Demi goodbye. "See you tomorrow."
Demi began to run back toward her home. She heaved a sigh, allowing a harsh cough to escape her chapped lips. When she reached the familiar tan house - the house where it all ended - she ran up to her room and closed the door softly behind her.
