Chapter 3
A New Friend
(Nick’s Pov)
“Hey Joe, Kevin wanna go bike riding” I said? “Sure”, they replied back. As we were getting ready to go the usual trip around the neighborhood I stopped and looked around taking it all in. The Jonas’s haven’t been at home in forever. It seemed like we just moved into the house in California again. “Hellooooo, Nick” I heard Joe say breaking my train of thought. “Oh sorry, just thinking”. The ride around the neighborhood was a good thing for me; people had moved in and I didn’t know. I especially didn’t know that people move in right in front of our house.
Me, usually being a bit shy, would never introduce myself to a new neighbor (at least not by myself). But today I felt like I needed to, like someone was whispering to me, “go, go introduce yourself. So that’s what I did. I rang the doorbell and no one answered, I tried it a second time and a girl who looked much disheveled (but pretty) answered. It looked like she had been crying; her eyes were very puffy. I said “hi my name’s Nicholas, but you can call me Nick and did you just move in”? “No”, she replied, “we moved in the beginning of the year”. “Oh” I said, “well would you and your family like to come to my house for dinner on Sunday”?
“I don’t know, she said, “I’d have to ask my”…. She was cut off by a deep, gruff voice yelling from the stairs. “Natalie”, the voice said, “who’s that”? Hmmm I thought to myself Natalie was a cute name. “Nobody Dad, just a neighbor introducing themselves”, Natalie said. “Well, what do they want”, her dad said. “They wanna know if we could come by the house on Sunday for some dinner”, she replied. “Tell ‘em yes”, he said. “Kay”, Natalie exclaimed not trying to sound to happy but couldn’t help it. Natalie couldn’t believe it her dad was being nice…but not for long!
“So my house 7:00pm” I said. “7:00pm “she said. We said our goodbyes and I left her house. I must have been still thinking about her when I got home because my mom asked why I was so happy. “Is it a girl or are you just smiling because you resumed home schooling”, she said”? A girl I said, the one across the street from us. “Ohhhh” she said, “does she seem nice”? “Yes, very much so” I said. “Well, I hope you have a happy life together”, she exclaimed! “Ha-ha, very funny”, I said happily!
