Chapter 2:
I clenched it tightly and zippered it securely into the pocket of my vinyl jacket. I didn't know how I was gonna get it back on, but I guess I'd have to take a day trip to a jeweler tomorrow...
The boy interuppted my thought process.
"I'm Joe. It's nice to meet you." His brown eyes lit up and his hand was offering a shake.
"I'm Kelly. It's nice to meet you too.." He held my hand softly and shook it.
Silence wrapped around us.
"Well, how do you like it here so far?" Joe gestured towards the homes surrounding us.
I would lie and tell him I love it, but I'm no liar.
"I hate it actually. I miss my friends & my old home. It's just too different for me right now."
My words were a surprise to his ears.
"Oh..well yeah I understand. I've moved a lot too. I miss Jersey a lot." He sounded a little pained.
And then I heard Jersey. He was from MY home state?!
"Wait, you lived in Jersey?"
*Head nod*
"That's where I just moved from!" I shrieked.
FINALLY I could maybe have a pal here in California.
His eye's widened with happiness. At least, that's what it looked like.
"REALLY?! Oh wow that's so awesome! What town?"
His tone was interested now.
"Colts Neck. Near that place... uh... Wy-something."
Crap. I couldn't remember what that town was called.
"WYCKOFF! That's where I was from!" His voice was hollering, and it made me giggle.
"Coincidence after coincidence; I'm starting to think you're just lying to me now," I teased back.
He put up his hands as if he were surrendering.
"Hey, hey. No need to point the finger. I'm not lying. Jersey is where I grew up, it's my home away from-" He nodded his thick black hair towards his own house. "-home."
He was kinda cute, I guess.
I just didn't want to make it apparent that I knew he was a household name...not yet at least.
He seemed to speak verbatim of whatever I said. We had a lot more in common than I had ever known. Joe talked me into 'at least sitting in his garage' for bit, until the wind controlled its unruly behavior.
"So why did you move here?"
I hestitated... a bit unsure myself.
"My dad's job or something. I kinda think it's a bluff, considering all his life he wanted to move out here. But I mean, I'm fine with it now." I shrugged my shoulders in context with my words.
He chuckled some.
"Why are you okay with it now? Opposed to 20 minutes ago when you said you hated it?"
Rats. He had caught my loophole.
"20 minutes ago I didn't have a friend here." I felt the blood rush to my cheeks.
Joe's grin just about reached his eyes.
People were right, he did look asian when he smiled.
"Thanks for letting me be your friend." He leant his elbows on the edge of his jeans and showed me a toothy smile.
